Programme

The event will kick off with the launch of the European Nitrogen Assessment, followed by a press conference and a high level workshop for policy stakeholders. In addition to that, side events are planned in the frame of the Edinburgh Science Festival, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and social events throughout the week.

For the conference part of the event from tuesday to thursday, a tentative programme has been developed, which can be seen below. Please note, that the order of talks may change still. We will communicate any changes with the affected authors and work closely with the session organisers to ensure a smooth conference progress:

More details regarding the individual events will be made available here shortly, in general, there will be:

  • Launch of the European Nitrogen Assessment: the report on the European Nitrogen Assessment (ENA), which has been compiled by a large number of international experts and renown scientists in the field over the last couple of years under the auspices of the ESF Programme Nitrogen in Europe (ESF-NinE) will be officially released and handed over to key policy makers. Following the launch, a press conference will enable media representatives to gain more detailed information, ask questions and conduct interviews as required.
     
  • High level workshop for policy stakeholders: representatives from relevant directorates of the European Commission, the European Environment Agency and other national and supranational bodies are invited to join two consecutive panel discussions on the afternoon of the ENA launch. The two panel discussions will focus on Key nitrogen threats to society and Integrating nitrogen in policy making, with moderators guiding the discussions and stimulating communication between panelists and the audience. [In parallel to this session will be a more research oriented session on 'ENA Findings on Nitrogen Processes', with talks on selected parts of the assessment - if you intend to attend this session please indicate your attendance on the Monday on the registration form].
  • International Science Conference: following the launch day, a 3-day international science conference will deliver keynote speeches, oral presentations and posters on all aspects of reactive nitrogen along the topics and themes outlined. Topical sessions will be set up during the summer, based on submissions of session proposals and papers received until then. 
  • Royal Society of Edinburgh Lecture ‘The European Nitrogen Cycle in a Global Context’: Lecture at the Royal Society of Edinburgh, George Street, Edinburgh,  lecture starts 6.30pm, followed by a drinks reception  – event is free to attend, however registration is mandatory,.Registration is now closed.
  • The Conference Dinner at Our Dynamic Earth (ODE) will take place on wednesday evening, from 7:00 pm. The dinner is included in the registration fee for all registered participants and we will offer tickets for accompanying persons at the registration desk. Before the dinner, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the impressive settings of a the rainforest display and other parts of ODE during a drinks reception and witness traditional Scottish Highland Dancing.
